Madhuri Vijay was born and raised in Bangalore. She is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, and her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Best American Short Stories, Best American Non-Required Reading and Narrative Magazine.
Her debut novel, The Far Field, won India’s JCB Prize for Literature and was a finalist for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. It was also nominated for the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Carnegie Medal for Excellence and the Dylan Thomas Prize, and was named a notable book of 2019 by The Washington Post, The Times, Booklist, Publisher’s Weekly and others.
Her second novel, The Festival, will be published in 2028 by HarperCollins (India), Summit Books (USA), and Picador (UK). She currently serves as a 2026-27 de Groot Visiting Fellow at the American Library in Paris.
